Fluoride Removal Inline RO Filter Cartridge, single white inline cartridge standing upright with red-capped elbow fittings at each end

How do I install it?

Included & installation

  1. Follow the cartridge replacement steps in your cooler or RO system manual.
  2. Shut off the water supply to the system. On a water cooler, also turn off the hot and cold switches and unplug it before servicing; hot water can scald.
  3. Loosen the connector fittings counterclockwise and remove the used cartridge.
  4. Wrap the connector fitting threads with thread seal tape and connect them to the new cartridge.
  5. Turn the water back on slowly and check every connection for leaks.
  6. Flush the system as the manual directs before using the water.

Fluoride Removal Inline / Reverse Osmosis Filter Cartridge

Description

Fluoride reaches tap water two ways: many cities add it, and it also occurs naturally from the erosion of mineral deposits. If you want less of it in the water from your cooler, RO faucet or refrigerator line, the media inside the filter is what decides the result.

This inline fluoride filter cartridge, part CQE-RC-04060, is filled with Crystal Quest Calcium GAC: black granular bone char made by calcining cattle bones until only a mineral framework of hydroxyapatite and a carbon surface remain. That mineral framework is what captures fluoride. The label names it plainly: Calcium GAC Fluoride Reduction Inline Cartridge.

At a glance

  • Targets fluoride in municipal water, as a dedicated point-of-use stage
  • Real bone char: 70 to 76% hydroxyapatite and 9 to 11% carbon, per Crystal Quest's Calcium GAC data sheet
  • A natural mineral reaction locks fluoride into the media as fluorapatite
  • Fits where you need it: pre or post RO, refrigerator and ice maker lines, water coolers and fountains
  • Inline and sealed: plumbed on the water line with threaded connectors, replaced as one piece

What you are looking at

A white, sealed inline cartridge with an elbow connector at each end. The label shows the flow arrow, part number CQE-RC-04060, the operating limits and nine numbered replacement steps. Inside, the black bone char granules are sealed in, so a change is a clean swap of the whole cartridge.

How bone char removes fluoride

A swap inside the crystal

Hydroxyapatite holds hydroxide groups in its crystal structure. Fluoride carries the same charge and is almost the same size, so it can take the hydroxide's place. The result is fluorapatite, a stable, insoluble mineral that stays locked in the media instead of returning to your water. Where fluoride is higher, some of it also precipitates with calcium from the media as calcium fluoride.

A carbon surface, too

Unlike aluminum oxide fluoride media, bone char also carries carbon: Calcium GAC has about 200 m²/g of total surface area, about 50 m²/g of it carbon. That carbon surface adds adsorption of some dissolved organic and colored compounds, which is why bone char has a long history in purification beyond water.

Why pH and contact time matter

Bone char takes up fluoride best in slightly acidic to neutral water, and its capacity falls as pH rises. The exchange is also gradual: the longer water stays in contact with the media, the more fluoride it can take up. That is why an inline cartridge running at its rated flow, rather than faster, gives the media the time it needs.

What it reduces

Primary target (printed on the cartridge label): fluoride, specifically inorganic fluoride in municipal water.

Also adsorbed by bone char (a capability of the media, not a separate tested rating for this cartridge):

  • Heavy metals such as lead, which Crystal Quest's Calcium GAC data sheet lists among bone char's strengths
  • Some dissolved organic and colored compounds, through its carbon surface

Not designed to treat: bacteria and viruses, nitrate, hardness, dissolved solids, or chlorine and chemical tastes as a dedicated stage. For chlorine and chemicals, pair it with a SMART inline cartridge. Use it only on water that is microbiologically safe.

Is it right for my water? It is built for inorganic fluoride in municipal water. If your fluoride is organic or comes from a well or another natural source, talk to a Crystal Quest specialist first. A Fluoride Test shows your starting level and lets you check the treated water. Bone char is animal-derived; if you prefer a non-animal media, Crystal Quest's Aluminum Oxide Fluoride Reduction Filter Cartridge comes in standard drop-in sizes.

Why Crystal Quest

  • Our default fluoride media. Calcium GAC is the standard fluoride cartridge media across Crystal Quest's cartridge systems, now in an inline format.
  • A published media spec. Hydroxyapatite and carbon content, surface area, pore structure and hardness are listed in the Specifications tab, from Crystal Quest's own data sheet.
  • Clear scope. We tell you the water it is built for and what affects its life.
  • Over 1,000,000 people served since 1994. Crystal Quest builds under ISO 9001 quality management, has made water filtration in the USA for over 30 years and offers lifetime support by phone, email or chat.

Where it fits

  • Thunder under-sink RO systems: listed as the optional fluoride cartridge, CQE-RC-04060, on Thunder system pages such as the Thunder 1000C.
  • The Countertop Reverse Osmosis System: listed as its optional fluoride stage.
  • Bottleless water coolers: listed as an optional cartridge in the water cooler manual.
  • Refrigerator and ice maker lines: plumbed inline on the supply tubing. It is not a slot-in replacement for a refrigerator's built-in filter.

Optional inline specialty cartridges do not have one fixed position in every system. Its published applications include pre and post point-of-use RO; install it where your system's manual specifies. Need a fluoride stage in a standard drop-in housing? See the Calcium GAC Fluoride Reduction Filter Cartridge.

Common questions

Does an inline fluoride filter really remove fluoride?

Yes. Fluoride swaps into the hydroxyapatite in bone char and forms fluorapatite, a stable mineral that stays in the media. How much it removes depends on your fluoride level, pH, flow and how much capacity remains, so test your water to see your results.

Is Calcium GAC the same as bone char?

Yes. Calcium GAC is Crystal Quest's name for its bone char media: black granular bone char made by calcining cattle bones, mostly hydroxyapatite with a carbon surface. It is a different material from coconut shell carbon.

Can I use it on well water?

It is intended for municipal water with inorganic fluoride. For organic fluoride or fluoride from a natural source such as a well, speak with Crystal Quest for a system recommendation.

Where does it go in my system?

Optional inline specialty cartridges do not have one fixed position in every system. Its published applications include pre and post point-of-use RO; install it where your system's manual specifies.

How long does it last?

Incoming fluoride levels and how much water you use set the service plan. A fixed interval is not established for this cartridge, so confirm the plan with Crystal Quest and test the treated water.

How is it different from the drop-in fluoride cartridges?

Crystal Quest's drop-in fluoride cartridges fit standard housings in four sizes. This is an inline cartridge with the same Calcium GAC media for coolers, appliance lines and point-of-use RO systems.

Is bone char vegan?

No. Bone char is made from cattle bone. For a non-animal fluoride media, choose the Aluminum Oxide Fluoride Reduction Filter Cartridge in a drop-in housing.
